On February 13, 2012 the Trinidad Moruga Scorpion was rated as the hottest chili in the world by New Mexico State University's Chile Pepper Institute with a mean heat of more than 1.2 million Scoville heat units (SHUs) and individual plants rating as high as 2,009,231 SHUs. on the Scoville scale. The Trinidad Moruga Scorpion was not certified by the Guinness Book of World Records. The previous record holder was the Bhut Jolokia or Ghost Chili from India. The pod has a fruit-like flavor, which makes it a sweet-hot combination. This is the red variety.
